Overview
Gran Turismo is a racing game for the PlayStation 2 game console. Originally titled Gran Turismo 2000, the game saw several delays and was not released until the summer of 2001. It sells itself as being 'the real driving simulator.' There are just over 150 cars available in Gran Turismo 3, including Formula 1 cars. Almost every available vehicle can be upgraded and have settings such as downforce, suspension and gearing tweaked. Gran Turismo 3 includes an arcade mode and Gran Turismo mode.
Arcade
Allows players to choose a vehicle and a track and then either race against CPU controlled cars, another human player, or on their own in order to try and set a new track record.
Gran Turismo
This is similar to a story or career mode. The player begins with a set amount of credits with which to buy their first car. They may then enter races in order to win cars and/or money which can then be used to buy better cars or upgrade current ones. As players complete the easier races and tournaments, they will need to start passing license tests in order to advance to more difficult tournaments.
Gran Turismo 3 is frequently cited as being the Playstation 2's best selling exclusive game, having shipped just under 15million copies worldwide.

Critical Reception
Game Informer gave the review scores of 9.5 and 9. Reiner, who gave the higher score, wrote, "From rags to riches, Polyphony has completely revamped the GT experience. Even though the number of cars is greatly reduced, the ushering in of a new physics model and graphics engine justifies the sequel status. Along with the distinguished look - one that should leave you drooling in delight - vehicle customization and handling have been taken to a whole new level. The computer opponents are intelligent and vigorous drivers, and the new environmental effects only add to the formidable task at hand".
