Overview

Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge is the third game in Magnetic Fields/Gremlin Graphics's series of racing simulation games based on the Lotus luxury sports car brand. It debuted on the Commodore Amiga in 1992, was quickly ported to sister system Atari ST the same year, and then subsequently released on IBM PCs and the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1993. Since the Genesis had skipped the first game, this game was named Lotus II: R.E.C.S. (short for Racing Environment Construction Set, the in-game track editor).

The third game incorporated both the simulation style of the original game and the more arcade sensibilities of its sequel, giving players the choice of their preferred mode. It also added a new Lotus model, the concept car Lotus M200, and several new sceneries. Most notable was the in-game track editor that could use password "seeds" taken from other creators, or the player could simply type in a random string of characters for a procedurally-generated course.
