Work began on a fourth Dragon Age game following the release of 2014's Dragon Age Inquisition, with a development codename of Joplin. This game was to follow directly on from Inquisition's main story ending, with the setting being the pro-magic country & former empire known as the Tevinter Imperium.

Issues within BioWare during the development of Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem lead to Dragon Age developers being pulled to work on these two troubled games, Andromeda features a "Dragon Age Finaling Team" in it credits. This continued restructuring of staff lead to Joplin being cancelled in 2017 and many Dragon Age veterens departed BioWare as a result.

A new Dragon Age game began development, codenamed Morrison, being built upon technoglogy used in Anthem. This new version of the 4th Dragon Age game had a teaser trailer shown at the 2018 Game Awards with Inquisition companion and future antagonist Solas repeating a line from the Dragon Age Inquision Trespasser DLC ending, "I suspect you have questions."

On June 6, 2024, it was announced that the subtitle for the game had changed from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard. A full reveal date was set for June 11.
