Gran Turismo 2

Gran Turismo 2 is a realistic driving simulator for the PlayStation featuring over 600 vehicles.

Gran Turismo 2 is a two-disk (one for Arcade Mode and the second for Simulation Mode) driving simulator developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the much awaited sequel to Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo 2 includes over 600 cars to race on 27 tracks across the world. The game features off-road rally races for the first time in the series and contains a split-screen multiplayer mode for two players.

Gameplay

Gran Turismo 2 is a realistic depiction of automobile racing, and features a fully realized physics system that attempts to recreate the experience of driving an actual car. Players progress through the game by competing in races against AI controlled opponents. Many of these races have specific requirements regarding which cars are allowed to participate. These limitations force players to purchase and tune specific cars that adhere to race guidelines. Cars are purchased and modified using an in-game currency of "Credits". Players earn credits for completing races or selling cars, and more credits are awarded for finishing a race in a high position. In addition to awarding the maximum possible credits for a race, finishing in first place will often provide the player with a new car. In many cases, this car is not a vehicle that could have been purchased through any of the in-game dealerships.

Most of the game's races are also linked to a specific level of "licence". Licences are earned by completing licence tests which are essentially tutorial segments that can be failed if the player does not complete them within the requisite time requirement.

Modes

Arcade

Players may choose what ever car or course they want and attempt to achieve a new course record.

Simulation

Players will earn drivers licenses, which in turn are used to race various classes of cars to achieve trophies which will also earn them new cars, credits to buy new cars and unlock new courses.

Controversies

Recall

When Gran Turismo 2 originally shipped, it was discovered that players could not obtain a 100% completion ranking. Polyphony Digital and Sony soon discovered this and re-released the game with minor changes to allow for 100% completion. They also started a program where players could send in their "Simulation" discs and be provided with an updated copy. Soon after the program began, however, they stopped requiring the original discs be returned, and began sending out discs to anyone who completed the brief process for obtaining a replacement.

Although it was never officially revealed why players could not obtain 100% completion, it was widely suspected that a last minute decision to remove drag racing from the game caused this. Drag racing had been discussed several times during the development as a new feature. Additionally, there was a single car with 1001 horsepower that could be earned as an event reward. It was tuned to have incredibly fast acceleration and straight line performance, leading many gamers to be believe it was, in fact, a drag car.

RUF/Porsche

Gran Turismo is self-styled as the "ultimate driving simulator" and likewise set out to be the most complete and realistic video game representation of racing. Therefore, they achieved an unprecedented number of cars and a high level of realism. EA has famously owned the license to Porsche cars, which appeared in the Need for Speed series of games. Polyphony Digital instead obtained the license to RUF, a company that heavily modifies Porsche cars. The manufacturer description in the game makes reference to this as well.

Race Requirements

While the game has several race series that are ostensibly for a certain type of vehicle (e.g. "Muscle Car Cup"), these "requirements" actually have no impact on the game itself. Any car can be entered in these races, as long as it does not exceed the race's maximum horsepower.
